A Great Opportunity for You

The National State Teachers of the Year (NSTOY) organization is having its annual conference in Wyoming from July 17-21 this year!  WEA members from throughout Wyoming are urged to attend activities scheduled for Community Day on Wednesday, July 19, at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne.  This is an opportunity for you to welcome these outstanding educators to our wonderful state, but also a chance for you to attend workshops and presentations that can earn you U.W. credit and/or give you great ideas for the new school year.

Wednesday’s agenda includes morning workshops presented by various Teachers of the Year, followed by a lunch keynoted by Governor and First Lady Freudenthal.  Edna Rogers of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library (http://www.imaginationlibrary.com/home.php) will speak about the program established to foster a love of reading among preschool children and their families; communities provide a brand new, age-appropriate book by mail each month to every child under 5 in their community.  One town in Wyoming currently participates; the hope is to broaden that involvement to other communities.  In the afternoon, a distinguished panel will address the theme of “No Quality Educator Left Behind.”

Another exciting opportunity that WEA members will want to attend is to hear the 2006 National Teacher of the Year Kimberly Oliver, the keynote speaker at the Thursday evening banquet, July 20, at the Historic Plains Hotel in Cheyenne.  You may attend just her speech at no charge, or if you wish to eat at the banquet, the cost will be $32.  Advance reservations are required.

For more details or reservations to attend any sessions at the NSTOY conference, please contact the conference coordinator, Joan Brummond, by e-mail at: Joanleeb@aol.com, or by phone at:  home—970-221-1304; cell—307-631-2723.  Let’s give these folks a hearty Wyoming welcome!

WDE Invites Comments on Proposed R&Rs

On the Wyoming Dept. of Education Website, you can read and submit comments on the newly proposed Rules & Regulations for Chapter 33, Rules on Wyoming Bridges Summer School, Enrichment, and Extended Day Grant Program.  Comment period runs from June 12 – July 27, 2006.  Go to http://www.k12.wy.us/A/rules.asp.

Interest Rate Change

Attention borrowers!  On July 1, the federal student loan interest rate will increase by 1.84 percent.  That means the new rate for students repaying Stafford loans issued after July 1998 will be 7.14 percent (up from 5.3 percent), while the revised rate for parents repaying PLUS loans since July 1998 will be 7.94 percent (up from 6.1 percent).  (For those students who are still in school, within the six month grace period, or in deferment, the new rate will be 6.54 percent, up from 4.70 percent.)

Borrowers can contact their lender/loan servicer by June 30 to explore financial options, such as consolidation, to lock in lower interest rates.  The U.S. Dept. of Education has released a thorough consolidation checklist (http://studentaid.ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/students/english/loanchecklist.jsp?tab=repaying) to guide borrowers through the decision-making process.  For more information, please go to http://studentaid.ed.gov/.  (If you are uncertain of your current lender/loan servicer, see http://www.nslds.ed.gov/.)
