Step Up for Kids!
October 2-9 will see numerous events taking place throughout the communities and counties of Wyoming for the third annual Step Up For Kids Week. WEA encourages your support of these events that will bring hundreds of people together to raise awareness of all children's issues and the need for investment in children in our local communities, our state and our nation. It will also call upon voters to “VOTE FOR KIDS.”
The Wyoming Children’s Action Alliance is the Wyoming organizer, and the Every Child Matters (ECM) Education Fund the nationwide sponsor, of the non-partisan events. Step Up For Kids will call upon the state legislature, governor, mayors, and local officials to make our nation’s children a top priority.
Why do a Step Up for Kids Week?
· Because millions of American children live in poverty…millions are alone every day after school…millions are without health insurance…millions have no early learning opportunities….millions are abused and neglected.
· Because the U.S. ranks 20th in child well-being among 21 rich democracies.
· Because federal spending on children is declining sharply as a percentage of the federal budget.
The desired outcomes of Step Up For Kids Week are to raise public awareness of the needs of children and families in Wyoming and the U.S.; to get officials at every level of government to present their plans for shifting spending priorities towards families and children; to get the media to cover the children and family issues and how state and federal governments are making the policy decisions to meet their needs; to make America’s children a national political and policy priority; to close the investment gap that is growing ever larger when it comes to America’s children; and to encourage non-voters to register and everyone to vote with kids’ well-being in mind.
ECM and the Wyoming Children’s Action Alliance have encouraged each community to come up with an event design that will work best for it—an event that is fun but has a serious message.
